The group studies the mechanisms of glycosylation in proteins and the changes they undergo in pathological processes, in particular in neoplasms. In tumors, one often sees variations in the level of expression of glycosyltransferases, the enzymes which synthesize carbohydrate chains. These variations in turn cause altered carbohydrate chains; in addition to being important diagnostic and prognostic markers,  they feed the tumor progression, exacerbating the neoplastic phenotype. The group’s research has resulted in the production of tumor cell lines genetically modified to alter the expression of the glycosyltransferases relevant for the progression of the tumor. The effect of the alteration is studied both on the neoplastic phenotype and on its global gene-expression profile. The scope of the research is to identify those glycosylation alterations of particular clinical importance and to understand the mechanisms that cause these alterations to modify the tumor phenotype.
