Laboratory to study the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and anticarcinogenesis

Research areas

Identification of the danger of environmental exposure and evaluation of the risk of adverse outcomes, with particular attention to tumor pathology. The hazard assessment is performed according to the convention, using the Arpae-ER CTR (primary: Dr. Annamaria Colacci), which is housed in the Cancerology section of DIMES. The convention, focused on the research project 'Environmental risks and human health', has created strategies and experimental models using an integrated approach consisting of in vitro and toxico-genomic testing. This approach has made it possible to combine human resources, instrumentation, and scientific objectives, allowing university personnel access to the CTR labs in Arpae-ER (Laboratorio Mater di tossicogenomica e Centro di Saggio “Vitrox” certificato in Buona Pratica di Laboratorio, laboratorio di riferimento commissione europea, rete EU-NETVAL).

The risk assessment is performed using BMDS software to estimate the quantitative carcinogenic risk for mutagenic carcinogens, by calculating the TDI for substances with threshold dose. The use of this approach 

has facilitated the elaboration of various models in the OECD working plan, the active participation of national and international working groups in the creation of guidelines, testing strategies, and the risk assessment of dangerous substances.
