Neuropathology, molecular genetics, and clinical biochemistry of neurodegenerative diseases

Research areas:

Neurology, Neuropathology, Diagnostic and Prognostic Biomarkers.

Teaching activity:

Tutoring interns from undergraduate courses in Biology, Medical Biotechnology, and Medicine. Neuropathology course for specialists training in Neurology.


Charitable activities:

performing neuropathological diagnostic autopsies through analysis of serum and plasma biomarkers, using Western blotting, ELISA, and ultra-sensitive methods such as RT-QuIC, CLEIA, and SiMOA, and genetic-molecular, by direct sequencing of single genes and analysis of multigene pathology panels specifically for the diagnosis of degenerative diseases such as Prion diseases, Alzheimers, fronto-temporal dementias, Lewy body dementia, and Parkinsons (including atypical Parkinsons). The laboratory is a reference lab for the pre- and post-mortem diagnosis of Prion disease in Emilia-Romagna as well as nationally.


Instrumentation available:

  • 4 laminar flow bohazard fume hoods (type  IIB)
  • 5 multifunction microplate readers (BMG-Omega),
  • 2 high-powered ultrasonicators,
  • a preparative ultracentrifuge,
  • a processor for fixing tissue samples in paraffin,
  • a chromatograph,
  • an incubator for bacterial cultures for the production of protein with recombinant technology, and
  • 5 ultra freezers at –80 C° for the archiving and storing of biological samples of tissue and liquid.

Furthermore, together with other laboratories which are part of DiBiNeM and IRCCS-ISNB, we share the equipment for the automatic sequencing and analysis of DNA through Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing, a digital PCR system, an inverted epifluorescence and confocal microscope, and a laser micro-dissector.
