Stem Cell Processing Laboratory

The Stem Cell Processing Laboratory deals with the of handling and cryopreservation of bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell collections for transplants, both autologous and allogenic, and for cell treatments in patients with hematological pathologies.

The laboratory, which was created in 1981, is currently accredited by the National Transplant Center (Centro Nazionale Trapianti) and the National Blood Center for Transplantation (Centro Nazionale Sangue per il Trapianto) for autologous and allogenic stem cells. Since 2015 it has held the international accreditation ISCT-EBMT (JACIE) for “Autologous & Allogeneic Transplantation in Adult Patients, Immune Effector Cells administration, Collection of HPC Marrow, and Cell Processing - minimally manipulated”.

The processing laboratory consists of three parts:

  • the laboratory/study for receiving samples and managing the database and the reporting;
  • the laboratory with Class D filtration for the actual processing, regularly inspected by ARPA;
  • the cryobank, where the products to be transplanted are cryopreserved and stored.

Research areas:

Clinical research in the following areas:

  • Transplant use of umbilical cord blood with "intra bone" administration for patients with acute myeloid leukemia () for whom there is no allogenic donor;

  • Adoptive immunotherapy with natural killer (NK) cells from a haploidentical donor with mismatched KIR-ligand in high-risk patients with LAM;

  • Protocols for the mobilization of peripheral blood stem cells;

  • Cellular therapy CAR-T in patients with hematological pathologies.

  • 2 thermostatic water bath

  • 2 programmable cryopreservation system (Planer)

  • 6 nitrogen tanks for the long-term storage of cryopreserved material

  • 1 optical microscope

  • 1 analytical balance
